This biomod promotes activity in the recipient's naturally-occurring melanocytes (skin pigment cells) making them produce more and darker melanosomes. This makes the recipient's skin darker brown. The final colour can be determined at the time of initial treatment; after that, the recipient's skin will change colour slightly over time as a result of suntanning.
This biomod reduces (but does not eliminate) the risk and extent of sunburn and the need to apply topical sunblocks. It should also reduce long-term effects of sunlight on skin cancer risk and skin aging, but these results will likely take more decades to be proven.
