With all the advances in geneeering (geneneering? gene-engineering) and biotech in general, organic computing should be a thing. And since Acclerated Neurons are a thing, it could even be quite fast. Outside an organic body, it might even be more optimized for speed.
So, instead of simulating neural networks, you could actually grow them. They could be computing devices on their own or part of some electronic-organic-hybrid computer.
This would be an interesting game-world path to achieve Artificial (Organic) Intelligence.
Or at least you could build organic sensors, e.g. smell and taste, into electronic systems.
Some midway-point might be to use organic components to give computers and roboters actual feelings, needs and drives.
I could very much imagine some black science op experimenting with these. And that could lead so several plot hooks: - The orthodox "AI as opponent" angle.
- The Star Trek / Data angle of "prove its sentience and give it rights"
- Just some good ol' industrial espionage.
