Im schwarzen Walfisch zu Askalon,
wird kein Prophet geehrt,
und wer vergnügt dort leben will,
zahlt bar, was er verzehrt.
—traditional drinking song
German beer consumption has never recovered to pre-Blight levels, but the Poseidean tropics are hot, Lebensraum's population is growing explosively, and Hanover Industrial Group is very conscious about morale. Beer shortages have never been the most urgent quality-of-life complaint but are a recurring one, and Hanover's answer was Restaurant, Brauhaus und Distillerie Schwarzer Walfisch (Black Whale), Lebensraum's finest drinking establishment and Poseidon's first traditional German brewery...
...or it will be Poseidon's first German brewery once they start brewing beer. Despite Walfischia GmbH's eclectic team of researchers working thirty hours a day and calling in help from Lavender Organics, the planet has stubbornly refused to grow barley or hops.
Supplies limit the three master brewers to single-barrel batches for research purposes, but RBD Schwarzer Walfisch does not sit idle; its distillery has grown to be one of Poseidon's largest industrial beverage concerns, with distribution across much of the Pacifica Archipelago. While they began with vodkas that can be distilled from almost anything, their flagship product is Walfischia Extra Dry (which for legal reasons cannot be called gin), whose small-batch seasonal bottlings have developed a cult following on Earth despite interstellar shipping costs.
The lights are slightly dim at der schwarze Walfisch, and the tables and bar counter are cut from polished marble. A dozen flavored vodkas are on tap, and Walfischia Extra Dry seasonals are on the top shelf. Radlers are on a separate menu from cocktails, with prices a full digit higher and a limit of one drink per person per day to stretch the supply of draft beer. But the most coveted and expensive drinks are the selection of bottled beers imported from Earth; after sunset every payday one of these bottles is auctioned, and all proceeds past the opening bid go directly into Walfischia GmbH's research budget. (As a matter of fairness, high-ranking Incorporate personnel of any allegiance are forbidden from bidding against the lower pay grades, though they can and do arrange private Bierauktionen of their own.)
