Just downloaded the QuickStart, I thought to start a thread to discuss about it. So far I am liking what I see.

Gonna take some time to read through it all. Obvious first huge difference - Nereids! We've spent the past decade or so with the Aborigines, so it will take time to get used to the new name. But yeah, I like this change! Has a more mysterious sound to it and obviously no more associations with the indigenous people from across the pond.

Now beginning to read the PDF from front to back after skimming through it. Even though I already knew the beginning short story, it still sends shivers down my spine reading it. And I can't stop smiling, being hyped for the new edition. And I certainly welcome the new name for the alien race. Nereids fits perfectly, especially since the planet is called poseidon. I can't wait for the full ruleset though xD

I stopped at page 5. Color map! No need to go any further, I'm sold on the new edition.

Looks great! I'll get around to reading it at the weekend, and I'll probably have a chance to GM a oneshot in a month.

I've gorged myself on this pdf. Such a fantastic feeling to have new Blue Planet material in hand. <3

Finished reading the QuickStart and I have to say I really like this new edition of the game, surprised by the name change of Aborigines to Neireids but it’s not a big deal and I like it anyway, the tech chapter promise an update to the various technologies that I found very well done, can’t wait to read the complete book. Now all we have to do is to wait until the firsts months of 2020 for the start of the Kickstarter. By the way the new art style is awesome. Seems that I forgot to mention that the new game rules are very well done, they’re a new and interesting way to play the game.

Seems that I forgot to mention that the new game rules are very well done, they’re a new and interesting way to play the game. I really like - the tags, tracks, ties for the characters. Great idea how to give narrative attributes to characters. I really like them. - colour map, yay! - Models for equipment, genius idea! - layout and fonts are very nice - like the cover too I think it is good too- equipment modifiers are nice too, maybe add it to the summary too? Not my taste - the combat tags and statuses. I found them superflous. Unconscious is unconscious, do not see why it needs to be a tag/status. - simplification generally is not my cup of tea. Tough SOB is not skill, nor is Wary (p. 34). Not that it is wrong, I just do not like to mix these thing. Close Combat manoeuvrers were not that complex IMHO. Low ammo status, counting ammo is not that difficult... - initiative, no more multiple actions? I like the V2 initiative better. All in all a new modern rules set, for which I am too old!

Glad everyone seems to like it, and I really value the feedback on what you don't. The big advantage of the quickstart is that it gives folks a chance to check things out and us a change to change them before the final version. Please keep the feedback coming.
Couple of notes:
• The "cover" image isn't - the cover I mean. The final cover is still in production and is an intentional callback to the v1 cover. Stay tuned!
• Though I too prefer aborigines (per the formal definition of the word) we wanted to make a change out of respect for other perspectives. When I found out that nerieds were the spirit attendants of Poseidon I was sold.
• Things like Tough SOB and Wary are not skills. They are called focus attributes and are optional - ways players can differentiate their characters when there are only 4 core attributes.
• There are still multiple actions - they are called reactions and described on page 43. Initiative still works the same way it did in v2.
This all said, I agree with you Michael. I am still a simulationist player at heart, but in practice, as a GM, I appreciate simplifying rules. It is perhaps because I too am old that keeping track of too many details takes away from my enjoyment of the story and character interactions.
It's also the direction game design has gone (even D&D) and what modern/new gamers expect, and part of the intention of the new edition is to bring BP to a new audience. The cool thing is that v1 and v2 aren't going anywhere - we can still play the game those ways if we want.

Oooh, we're gonna get an underwater cover art!! AWESOME! I adore the piece of art you had produced for the Quickstart cover, so this is a total win-win.

Just to say ... I loved the original V1 cover art... and urm, the interior art too.. in fact much of v1, except perhaps it wasn't as well-presented as a *system* as it could have been.
I'm used to "crunch" systems (and V1 was certainly that), but it needs to be organised in a manner that flows, and is logical. In v1, I'd often found myself, struggling looking for stuff for ages... and that book was heavy!
Ahem, anyway, back to the version in hand (so to speak)... the art work, just a suggestion, but perhaps a dual aspect, the deep, dark and mysterious.. Back cover.... and the hard, and shiny bright tech for the front?
As for the interior art.. I much prefer the V1 art, it seemed, and I dare to say it.. more Adult.. and Hard Sci-fi certainly more so than the simpler, slightly comic V2 art. (Not that it's bad, since it's universal throughout, just not as *technically* precise..

Just to say ... As for the interior art.. I much prefer the V1 art.. You aren't the only one! Something about the 'old school' stippling art style in the original was really cool, vs some of the more comic-y art in V2. The whole layout of the first book, dated these days, at the time was one of my favorite parts. The difference being that the second edition had several different artists - and in case (if my avatar wasn't a clue), I thought that the watercolor art pieces in v2 were top notch.

My favourite artwork from V2 was actually the cover of "Natural Selection".. though what I've seen from the Quickstart, the cover chosen for that is close to perfect, with the leading artwork from the Hardware chapter being close to what I might have chosen for the back cover. I believe it is important to be consistent though throughout with the standard of art, though it's perfectly acceptable, and I might say essential, to maintain colour for any artwork that is "player friendly" and B&W for the access denied sections.
