Over on Twitter, Mark Richardson is posting updates about the new maps being made for Blue Planet. He's doing it by creating the data in a proper GIS format so we can have all sorts of high-detail maps for whatever purpose. They're looking good!

You know I seem to recall that you can use the Google Maps API to render a custom topography map; Floating around out there is a google map for the Moon and Mars. Maybe it's time we get one set up for Poseidon, eh?

You know I seem to recall that you can use the Google Maps API to render a custom topography map; Floating around out there is a google map for the Moon and Mars. Maybe it's time we get one set up for Poseidon, eh? As all these maps are being created in some GIS tool, it should be "relatively" simple to port them over to Google Maps or something. I wonder if the GIS files will be made public?

I wonder if the GIS files will be made public? I would imagine so. I know as part of the stretch goals a lot of the map assets will be available as a virtual-tabletop resource, so why not the GIS as well? Also there's going to be that curated 'speculative scientific archive', which I sure am curious about.
