Neil, what an awesome idea!!! I absolutely love it! <3 It has Blue Planet written all over it. It's sort of like the opposite of kintsugi, but here, instead of beautifying broken items and celebrating their history via their scars, the settlers celebrate impermanence or the fragility of civilisation or nature's grasp on humanity. They roll with the punches in an artistic way, by accepting the inevitability of Fast Fungus whilst applying their artistic sensitivities to the slow destruction. It's a wonderful facet to add to Poseidon's culture and some of the settlers' philosophy (or possibly counterculture, as tagging traditionally should be a part of that). I love it!! Awesome addition in the tech section yet again too! Just wondering - would perhaps the sniff bots need to be slightly more costly? I'm terrible when it comes to putting a price tag on fictional sci-fi items, but I'm just thinking... Long John sits primarily below 1000 metres of depth. Those bots must be able to withstand quite a pressure.

That's one way of looking at it! I'm sure the people doing it are keen to show their artistic side. I was also trying to suggest that some of the building owners are less than keen on the practise: after all, they've still got fast fungus all over their walls!
Price of the sniffer bots? I was basing it on some prices of other robots. Yes, they're a bit cheap, but they're really quite simple and its almost all solid-state kit. The most fragile part would be the battery, I think, and that's just because there will be electrolyte layers you don't want touching and shorting out. I was going for "cheap but not trivial." Perhaps I should up the price a bit.

But it's still somebody's artistic sensitivities spewed all over your property, so you'll rarely appreciate the gesture, unless you've been tagged by some sort of Banksy. I imagine this art is quite short lived - not as much as sand sculptures during low tide, but still, it's fast fungus after all. The FF tagging tech gives it desired colours and shape but isn't potent enough to stop it (I'm sure there are gene-based solutions out there that can combat some fast fungus strains and I'm sure there are strains out there that would be too potent for the FF tagging tech) - but who knows, maybe in some cases it even stimulates further growth? That would be super nasty and a good reason for settlers to meet taggers with guns in hand.
