Hmm. I've just realised that BPv2 Player's Guide (page 245 - year 2078) states that Lambda Serpentis lies 35 light years from Sol, whereas the almighty Wikipedia puts it 39.5 light years from us. I guess telescope tech advancements over the past 20 years led to estimated distance adjustment?

Hmm, other sources put it at 38.3 light years from us.

Your comment really got me thinking so I just had to dig into it! Here's what a little online research found: The original distance was calculated from parallax data from the Hipparcos satellite launched back in 1989. In 2007 the data was recalculated, and from that they established the 'current' (as of 2007) distance of 39.54 ly. So it looks like the data did not change but our methods of calculating did. If you're super nerdy all the satellite data is compiled here --> simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/ In other super nerdy news, I play the online game Elite Dangerous, and I can tell you it was so disappointing to visit the Lambda Serpentis system and finding no exoplanets! Obviously their map of the Milky Way is wrong....

Awesome work, man. Thanks very much. Excellent level of nerdiness. Hmm, nerdness? Nerdity. Haha, that is certainly something Elite Dangerous will have to patch in, and soon! Gotta send them a bug report.
