Hey guys,
So, in Blue Planet Recontact:
- Aborigines are now Nereids - bodycomps are now VIs - Kingston is now Harmony (this came to me as quite a bit of a shock! Why change that, I wonder?)
Anybody spot any other lore/name changes, as compared with BPv2 and 1?

(edited) Ah, and we of course have the massive change:
- NRM is now NGC
Looks like the New Gaians still deal in pharium and other shady stuff, whilst patrolling what used to be Kingston (and is now Harmony) on their hovercrafts, armed to the teeth, so the faction might have a bit different aesthetic, but plenty remains the same.

Hey, looks like crime is getting all kinds of attention in BPR! - The Gorchoff family are now calling themselves Gorshkov Should be easier to pronounce, that's for sure.

Personally I don’t have any problem with the name changes.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying I have a problem. Just getting used to the new canon.

It would definitely be useful to have a list of setting name changes from edition to edition, if something like that doesn't already exist.
Allan.

I may have missed something, but why were those things renamed?

I would venture a guess that 20 years ago using the word Aborigines for an alien race or New Rastafarian Movement for a fictional religious gang, was acceptable. But time moves on and it's not just the tech that gets updated. But there are probably other reasons too. Nereids has a bit more mysterious and watery sound to it. In case of the New Gaian Collective I think we're seeing a tonal shift in the native/ecoterrorist/insurgent theme. But yeah, that's just me guessing.

Can't say that re-naming things will make any difference to me (I'll still have the "original" colonists in game call them aborigines for instance), and from a pseudo-political-publishing standpoint why bother changing Kingston at all*? * Unless there has been a "serious" power shift towards setting up a hippy-commune on Poseidon that is... BTW in D&D "Halfings" are HOBBITS, not some miniature elf-wannabe. I know the legal implications for publishers, but otherwise, it's just change for changes sake... I can't see the rationale for the changes myself.

Hah, I've just finished editing various bits in all (well, just the newest) stories I've been writing the past years, to keep up with the new canon. But yeah, nothing wrong with sticking to the old setting/name scheme if the new one doesn't work for you, I'm sure (unless you run campaigns for strangers on conventions, etc., in which case just tell them which edition you're using?). I remember various editions of the old World of Darkness shifting all kinds of factions left and right and my group would usually stick to what we knew/liked best in between of all the changes. In the end Blue Planet is Jeff's baby, obviously very much loved, so regardless of the reasons behind getting these changed I personally would simply support the dev decisions and feeling comfy with them.

I have learned some important things in 20 years and the way I see the world is different. Though I know what I meant using the words aborigine and Rastafarian I can not know that others, with more personal connections to these words, would know my intent. Accordingly, I felt it was important to respect that and made the changes. When I discovered that in actual mythology nerieds were Poseidon's spirit servants it was an easier change to make. Virtual interface (VI) instead of body comp is just one of what will be many attempts to update the tech to better represent - 20 years later - the forms it can take. Seriously - even BP v2 predates cell phones, not to mention wearable tech! The truth is, the NCG was mostly a "find and replace" for NRM. The rest of the content describing them is virtually unchanged - they have always had an insurgent element.

Just looked Wikipedia to see when BP was first published and I am impressed, really where did you take the idea of bodycomps so before smartphones? Wireless internet in the 2000 did you read a lot of speculative tech literature? While re reading BP right now bodycomps doesn’t seem out of place instead they give the game a lot of realism given the ubiquity of today smartphones.

Jeff, without going into too many spoilers, of course, would you share with us any other major name changes that you're planning for the official canon? No worries of course if you'd prefer to keep them close to your chest - the Quickstart was such a delicious taster of things to come, I'm just so very hungry for more.

Actually, I couldn't really say as we are still working through the existing text, but I do not anticipate too many more beyond a few tech entries.

Cool cool. Hope you're having tons of fun and I'm sure I speak for all when I say we're eagerly awaiting Kickstarter date announcement, when you're ready.
